#3003 on display at Burlington's depot is now repainted with a grant from
Pepsi Cola, BNSF railroad, and local money. It has been repainted in the
original scheme when it came from the factory, without the white trim on the
wheels. The sandtower has also been repainted and the steps leading to the
cab. The city is planning to erect a new fence around it soon; and a new
display plaque was recently erected with information about the engine and
depot. the last time the engine was painted was in the early 1990's.
Another project in the works is the restarting of Friends of the Depot, an
organization dedicated to renovating the depot. A depot work day is being
planned, mainly painting being done. BNSF and Amtrak have already expressed
interest in seeing the depot revitalized. A grant has been applied for by
the area planning commission for a large sum to build a flood wall and other
major improvements.
This depot is a huge historical landmark to Burlington. It also needs to be
more of a center of attention to the community than before. It has huge
potential, and has been sitting dormant for years, with only a small waiting
area being used by Amtrak.
