The 14042, like all the CB&Q NE waycars with side doors, were rather recent conversions (1950-1960 era). I don't know all the reasons, but the CB&Q had such cars built with side doors in the 1880s and earlier; they disappeared at some point (converted to regular non-side door configuration). Many of the 28' 3 window cars were built with side doors. Perhaps the traffic on lines that would have been able to use such cars exceeded their small passenger-carrying capacity and a regular combine was necessary until the end when a waycar could handle the small amount of passengers and LCL traffic.
