Tom-
Actually, that is a spotting feature of all SD7s vs. SD9s.... I don't think it
was an option.

It is interesting you bring up detailing a Q SD7 because I was just going to
post an interesting detail I just noticed on the Q SD7's.

The Q SD7's did not actually have steps. EMD offered the SD7 (and I believe
SD9/SD18) with a "switching" step option. Instead of steps, there were cutouts
in the step well. (These cutouts are also there on units with steps, but look
like openings behind the steps.) This allowed a person to stand in the step
well when riding the locomotive without the step getting in their way. Of
course, getting up onto the locomotive was a bit more difficult.
