I never met Curtis but enjoyed his comic strip in Railroad and Railfan magazine
as well as his comments in his column on AMTRAK.
When he lost Suzanne we knew that it was a heavy loss for him but were not
aware of his struggle with leukemia.
May he rest in peace.

   Curtis and Suzanne Katz

I am sorry to inform you that my brother, Curtis Katz, an avid member of the
Burlington Route Historical Society, passed away on April 9, 2011.

Curtis had been battling leukemia for a year. His wife Suzanne had passed
away in October, 2009. Curtis became ill in February, and was finally
hospitalized and diagnosed April 8, 2010. He was in and out of the hospital
all year, and about 6 months ago he moved to a one-bedroom apartment in the
Hyde Park neighborhood so as to be closer to the University of Chicago
Hospital where his treatment took place. He went through three major rounds
of treatment, the last of which was a bone marrow transplant in December,
2010. After each round, he was briefly in remission; but the disease was
very aggressive. In March, he was on an experimental drug to try to control
the disease, which his doctors had recognized could not be cured; the drug
had thoroughly uncomfortable side effects, and Curtis decided he had had
enough. He stopped all medical treatment, and returned to just Christian
Science practice for his healing. He died quietly, at home, in his own bed,
with friends by his side, one year and one day after his diagnosis.

A Memorial Service will be held for both Curtis and Suzanne on Sunday, May
29, 2011 starting at 3pm at the Renaissance Chicago O'Hare Suites Hotel,
8500 West Bryn Mawr Avenue, · Chicago, Illinois 60631. (which is one block,
a 5 minute walk, from the blue line Cumberland el stop.)

We hope that you will come and share some of your fondest memories and
stories of both or either Curtis and Suzanne. We will have the room in the
  hotel until 6pm.

We would like to make a slide show for everyone's viewing pleasure during
the memorial of both Curtis and Suzanne and you, their friends. If you would
please send us a scanned or digitized photo, we would be grateful. Please
send pictures to Barb Katz at barb.seth@sbcglobal.net.

Please share the information about the Memorial Service with any and all
friends of Curtis's and Suzanne's. They would both enjoy the idea of all of
us getting together to (literally) sing their praises and share
  remembrances.

If you want to share, but cannot join us or would rather not stand up to
speak, you may send your thoughts to Barb at the address above.

Thank you all for your kindness, kind thoughts, and your kind words and your
love throughout Curtis and Suzanne's life and especially in recent months.

  Sincerely,
  Seth Katz
