Gerald-

I presume it was used to provide a contrast between the "old and the new"....

The 446 was rebuilt in 1918 as an A-2 4-4-0, formerly the CB&Q A-1 127 which
was oringinally B&MR 161 built by Aurora in 1887. As you stated, it was
scrapped at Eola in 1933.
I checked my A.W. Johnson photos of engines being scapped at Eola but he only
took CB&Q photos up to 1931...although there are many A1 and A2 engines being
scrapped there, the 446 was not there in his photos.

I rcvd, as a super Christmas gift, a LARGE framed b/w print of two Q steam
locos taken in larger depot area (i.e. appears to have at least 5 tracks with
'canopy' down ctr of island between 2 sets of the tracks). Based on
photographer (a major commercial firm in Omaha that did a lot of Q/UP work)
it's probably Omaha or Lincoln. The mystery:
Lead loco, freshly shopped is #446, scrapped in 1933. Coupled behind it is
#5600, delivered to Q in 1930 so photo was taken between those dates. Photo
taken from firemen's side with 4 "officials" in coat, tie and hats standing
atop 446's running board. WHY would an older loco, scrapped within 3 yrs or
less from the possivble photo dates be coupled to front of 5600 in a passenger
terminal with officials atop it? AND freshly shopped! One gentleman is
clutching some paperwork in one hand, otherwise no clues (could be CB&Q execs
or Brotherhood officials). 446 was NOT preserved but scrapped, no snow on
ground but does not appear to be excessively warm either so I'm guessing pic
taken between fall of 1930 & spring of 1933. WHY? Only other item is photo is a
hwt coach on another track in background.

Tks!

Gerald
