The scope of going to Chinese Red and stylized Burlington on freight cars,
locomotives, advertisements, hand-outs to shippers, etc is referenced in the
"59 Annual Report, internal Burlington publications of the time as well as the
full version of Overton's "Burlington Route". The Q's Marketing Dept was
doing what today would be called 're-branding' and in retrospect did a heck of
a good job of it. Remember this was the "new" era of Sputnik, Disneyland,
color TV, Interstates, etc. The Burlington may have been conservative in some
spending but never hesitated to promote business. If dereg of RRing had
occurred a decade or two sooner, I suspect you would have seen even more monies
invested in the 60's (& by BN in the 70's) Of course now the RR's have some
of the best ROI's around with even CSX running TV & radio commercials that
would have been unthought of by a RR just a few yrs ago.

I saw the notes that the changes to RED on E units was completed by
1960's, but what date did the Q start changing the nose from Black
to Red?
