Looking through the Railroad & Engineering Journal for Nov 1888 (ex Google
Books), I found the following -

The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy shops at Aurora, Ill. are building 12 new
passenger cars 54 ft. long and 9 ft. 8 in. wide outside. The inside finish is
antique oak, worked into very tasteful form, the carving being neat and
artistic. The head linings are maroon colored, very rich looking. Adams and
Westlake No. 91 lamps of 65 candle-power are used for lighting. The upper-deck
lights are blue glass. There are lavatories at each end of the car, one for
men, the other for women. At one end of the car there is a closet for holding
small baggage belonging to the passengers. The cars are carried on four-wheel
trucks having 42½ in. Arbel wrought-iron spoke wheels with steel tires. The
outside of the cars is painted Tuscan red, a new departure for the company?s
passenger rolling stock.

These cars were given numbers 62, 108, 109, 121, 122, 127, 130, 131, 140, 141
and 153, filling gaps in the number block allocated to coach cars. According
to Bill Glick's Passenger Car Roster, they were later renumbered 356 and
358-367 and then to 5489-5499, and were classed as either PA-8 or PB-8 (with a
vestibule) in about 1911. There is a photo of 5462 (as bunk car 250784) on
page 275 of Bill Glick's Passenger Car Photo Album.

I only found numbers for 11 of the cars in the 1890 ORER - the 12th car may
have been B&MR 89 (later becoming 5500) although that car is shown as having
been built by Barney & Smith.

(And if anyone knows how to search Google downloaded pdf's other than looking
through page by page, please advise me off list, as the usual search button
doesn't work on Google books)
