The smoke abatement effort continued well into the diesel era...On the Rock
Island we had switch engines 800 and 801. These were Lima built and were
notorious for their heavy smoking especially after idling for awhile..There
were admonishments "aplenty" that these engines were not to go into LaSalle
St. station, since, it was reported that the Chicago smoke inspectors like to
"lie in wait" for these offenders and would promptly issue a pollution citation
to the RI if the engines were caught int he depot.
These engines normally worked around 47th St. and would make occasional trips
down to the 12th St. yard and sometimes even would make a delivery of mail cars
or baggage cars for loading into LaSalle St. station. No citations were issued
"on my watch", but it was rumored that "management" would be "unhappy" when
such citations were made.

Subject: [CBQ] Chicago smoke pollution
Dave
The American Engineer and Railroad Journal for 1911, on the subject of the
smoke problem in Chicago, presented a table showing the smoke reports for 31
railroads that ran into Chicago. It commented -
Out of seven reports, this is the sixth in which the Chicago, Burlington &
Quincy has maintained
first place. The Burlington certainly is to be congratulated on the success it
has attained,
especially when it is considered that this road has a very large number of
locomotives operating
in the city.
No further comment is needed!
