The Union Hotel in Burlington was across the street (Main Street) from the
depot, but was there long before any depot occupied the present site. The
3-story Italianate-style hotel was built in 1867, a year before the CB&Q's
Mississippi River bridge was completed at Burlington. The hotel was placed
on the National Register of Historic places in the early 1990s, but due to
safety issues, was razed in May of 1999. Asbestos abatement took several
months after that to complete, however.
