Rupert: like you I'd guess it was a one-time special use box car (heavy, dense
load that could not be left exposed in a gon or flat OR inherited for a
recently acquired road; in this case given the date of 1925, possibly Tabor &
Northern or Atlantic Northern, two Iowa shortlines whose only connections were
CB&Q or the Deadwood Central. Gerald

They appear to all be the same size - 34' - but there were still 12 of that
size in revenue service in 1921 when the book was
published. The last of the 34' box cars was 28935 - a class XM-5 built in 1899
by AC&F - last listed in the ORER's in 1925.
However, this probably wasn't the oldest "oldie" - that title could go to 31999
which was 31' 3" outside length. It was first listed
with that number in the ORER of 1925 and the last listing was in 1930.
According to the 1930 Diagram Book, it was built in 1905
although I have my doubts as, by then, the minimum standard was at least 34'
whilst the CB&Q had received its first 40' boxes in
1902! I've no idea of the origin of the car - whether it came from a late
subsidiary or what - but the number ("99") was a typical
one-off number for samples or odd-balls. That certainly wasn't the original
number - 31892-32290 ex B&MR were 34' cars that were all
off the roster by 1920.
Perhaps it was built in 1905 for a special purpose by nothing obvious comes to
mind.
History is a fascinating thing!
