I have a question that's been nagging me about the CB&Q's covered hoppers in the 85500-85639 series. I've found a couple records of these cars used to haul "SLUDGE" in 1969, but do not know the origin of the loads. The loaded cars came north to Laurel, MT, interchanged to the NP and thence west to Tacoma, WA (I do not have exact destined receiver information). Anyone know what exactly these cars were hauling, and better, what their weathering looked like in this service? It's most likely the loads originated from an on-line customer on the Q or C&S, but also possible the cars were assigned to a pool for a shipper off of CB&Q rails. Pure speculation, but I've wondered if this might possibly be mining waste of some kind sent to ASARCO's Tacoma smelter for reprocessing.
