Yes Indeeedy Leo there were local agreements elsewhere...The practice on the
Rock Island was called "dutching". It came about when numerous time claims
were being filed by road crews and local switch crews between Joliet and Bureau
when the Red Ball Pickup...a glorified local would have "Illiniois Division
cars in his train out of Blue Island and would pick up cars for the same
destinations at Joliet. Thus after his Joliet pickup he would have two sets of
setouts for several stations between Joliet and Bureau where local switch
engines were worked.
The problem was solved by Joliet yard..."dutching" the pickkup...ie instead of
having the closest station cars first out on the Joliet pickup the furthest
station setout in the pickup was first out...When the RBPU stopped at Joliet he
would hang onto his "Illinois Divsion setout cars made up in traditional
station order.
He would then pull into the yard holding onto what he had out of BI and shove
them against the Joliet pickup which was Dutched. and VOILA the cars for the
local stations came together and would continue to do so after each setout was
made. He, of course, had to hang onto everything between the engine and the
cars to be set up at each station when the local setouts were made, but it
worked.
How do you like "them potatoes" from a nearly 50 year old memory.
Pete

Subject: [CBQ] Streators ahead of Ottawas
Does anyone else remember the special local agreement to carry the
Streators ahead of the Ottawas picked up in route on 85 and later 11811 ? The
purpose was to streamline p/us in route so that after setting out at Ottawa all
the Streators came together w/o making double moves at each station in
route to keep the train in station order.
Were there similar local agreements elsewhere ?
Registering for the spring meet brought this to mind.
