Hi to all,
Well despite the onset of freezing conditions, i made it out to the car today
and completed the north side with new siding, it looks so cool and just like a
railroad car again, all we have left on this side is the cover strip under the
sill that hides the top of the boards and then the corner pieces around each
window that hold the toplights in place and allow the main windows to slide.
Tonight i have been gently trying to resurrect the only totally original cherry
toplight and bottom window, this is a scary task as they need sanding, sealing
and filling but have the original glass still in them, how do we know? Well the
glass is distinctly wavy and the quarter round edge trim is cherry too and
appears never to have been replaced. The other three 'original'
windows.... which arent, are from car 525 a St Charles product from 1900 and
are oak frames which are in much better shape but still need TLC.
All these windows are going back into their original spaces on the north side,
the cherry frame with a protective cover over the glass. Some people have said
'oh you should keep them out and put them on display behind glass' my answer is
that they have always been with the car, the cherry frame from 1887, the oak
frames from 1925/1926, they need to be back in the rightful place.
So now its on to the West end.
We are going to arrange some kind of slip boards where the roadname was above
the windows, mainly because we have 3 roadnames that we could use, Denver Texas
and Fort Worth, Union Pacific Denver and Gulf, and Colorado and Southern, so it
will be fun to have the all the roadnames represented on the car at different
times.
Apologies for the ramblings but its an exciting time for us grown up boys !!
Cheers to all
