The Consolidated Code and before that the Burlington Rule Book stated when
a bell was to be rung. The various scenarios are too numerous too list
here.
The most frequent reason to ring the bell was starting or stopping
movement,public road crossing, approaching stations and various other
scenarios.
Also the bell was rung liberally when a ground person accomplished
something unusually amazing or spectacularly stupid.
