GHQ has produced a conversion kit in n-scale which includes all the detail parts necessary (incl both Worthington & Elesco feedwater heaters) to accurately model the Q O4 prototype from Kato's mikado. They followed up with a very nice "how-to" article: http://www.ghqmodels.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3260 Though likely you are referring to HO, the GHQ n-scale kit/article would be a valuable reference for an HO scratch-build project.
