#88 and #82 were always ideal to catch out of Savanna, hot trains with
maybe a few reefers for the Park. Four to five hours on duty and done. However
train 102 lovingly referred to as the pick up was not that pleasant.
Sometimes it seemed no matter what train you came to Savanna on, you were
blessed with the pick up a little after midnight. Looking back 40 years now,
everyone just took it in stride with a crew of engineer, a fireman, two
brakeman and a conductor. The job didn't seem that bad just long hours.

During most of the 1960s and late 1950s, the third eastbound between
Savanna and Cicero (in addition to #82 and #88) was called the Pick Up. This
may
be the train that you are referring to. The PU was due out of Savanna at
midnight and into Cicero at 9:00 a.m. This train did any local work between
Savanna and Oregon and picked up at Oregon and Rochelle. In the mid 1960s
the Q also ran wayfreights six days a week between Eola and Oregon and
Rochelle and Rockford.
