I posted this message a few days ago, but I don't think it ever came through.
My apoligies if it is a duplicate post.
I really enjoyed the newest Burlington Bulletin #46 - Aurora Track Elevation.
This issue has greatly helped my perception of both Aurora and the Clyde Yard.
I've been working on plans to model the Racetrack between Aurora and Chicago as
N-Trak modules -- a selective compression of 40 miles into 40 feet that would
include Aurora, Clyde Yard, and Chicago Union Station. After several years of
research (and procrastinating), I finally have built about half my benchwork in
the last couple of months.
My representation of Aurora will be restricted to the area immediately around
the Broadway St. station.
Pretty much the same with Chicago as the area around CUS.
I want to represent Clyde Yard, but again must downsize to a smaller version.
It will include the roundhouse / diesel building, fueling depot, staging /
sorting yard, and piggyback loading. I have an aerial photo of Clyde from 2002.
The drawings that came with BB 46 really clarify what I'm looking at.
I do have questions about the piggyback loading. In the drawing, I can see stub
tracks and ramps for circus wagon style loading. I also see what I believe are
gantry cranes near the corners of Freighthouse 9. Does anyone know if these are
MiJack Cranes? If not, does anyone know when MiJack cranes were brought into
Clyde? MiJack was founded in 1954. My son repairs MiJack cranes (and yes he's
kept busy), so I would like to include one if it meets my era (mid-1960's)
I have found the web site "Historic Aerials" most usefully in my research.
their address is:
http://www.historicaerials.com
Unfortunately, they don't have photos of all areas. As for Cicero/Clyde Yard,
aerial photos are available for 1938, 1951, 1962, 1972, 1988, 1998, 2002, 2005,
and 2007 which leaves several large gaps in the CB&Q era. It's amazing the
changes that have occurred at Clyde over the past 50 years!
Thanks in advance for any information about the MiJack cranes at Clyde Yard!
