I want to tell you about the conductor, Russell Sloan who took this
consist out of WQuincy in 1965. But before I do let me explain why I
am replying to so many postings that are weeks old. On April 8 I
checked in my 89 year old Dad who lives next door to me like I did
every night and found him unresponsive and not breathing. After
calling 911, I tried CPR and worked on him until the paramedics
arrived and took over. As I waited outside I began to experience a
severe headache and my son who lives closeby asked one of the
paramedics to take a look at me. I was soon on my way way to the
local hospital and then air evaced to Columbia, Mo. to the University
Hospital. I had suffered an aneurysm in my brain(thanks spellcheck)
and was flat on my back for 16 days in ICU. After 3 weeks I got to go
home very week and with some therapy to look forward to which I am
still going to. I would say I'm about 1/2 speed now and making
progress each day. Looking back, I can see the hand of God sifting
each moment of this happening out. It is ironic to say, that in my
Dad dying he actually was a part in saving my life and what greater
gift could a father give to a child? So when a person gets home after
something like this and finds 850 emails waiting, it justs takes a
little time to catch up. Thanks to those of you who said a prayer or
two for me because I truly believe that was a factor in my return to
where I am. So now a small summery about Conductor Sloan. On my 2nd
trip ever, early in June of 1966, I caught a trip to WQuincy with
Conductor Sloan and on the return trip when we arrived at Galesburg, I
believe we stepped off the waycar a a place called Waterman Tower if
my memory serves me correctly, and then had to walk a very long way to
sign out at the yard office. I grabbed my grip and proceeded to start
my hike to the yard office when Russell hollered to get in his car.
It was told to me later that the yardmaster always called Russell's
wife when he was coming in and there she would be in a brand new Dodge
waiting to haul him up to the hard office. Now, fast forward a year
to 1967 and by then I have transfered to Hannibal and I'm working the
2nd trick switch engine when train 58 arrives from Galesburg. When the
waycar makes it through the crossovers into the yard, off steps
Russell and his brakeman and I notice how crippled he seems to be
because of a bad hip Watching him limp across that short distance to
the yardoffice even made my hip hurt. This went on for about a year
until I was invited by President Johnson to pay a three year visit to
the United States Marine Corps. When I got home and back to work on
the CB&Q I asked whatever happened to Russell and was told he had
retired and after retiring had had his hip fixed and was getting
along fine. Amazing story of a different generation of railroaders.
So Russ's train consist brought back fond memories. Thanks,
Russ Archie Hayden
