Russ, I was working the Keokuk switch engine about this time period and
probably made up the pick up for 356 on my afternoon switcher. 356 and 357
were assigned jobs that ran out of West Quincy and Burlington. We would leave
WQuincy one day and get our rest in Burlington and depart Burlington the next
day. The assignment was a 6 day job with Saturday or Sunday off if I recall
correctly. There were two assigned crews so we would meet someplace in route
most days and one of the assigned engineers was, should we say, prone to
violate Rule G not to mention half nuts. So when you had an order to meet Wild
Bill, you prayed that you would get to the meeting point first since it was
dark territory. If you were holding the main you made a beeline to the switch
stand to open it up for Wild Bill. I've seen him take a siding at about 35 mph
when it was a 20 mph turn out. We didn't care what took place on the other
end of the siding as long as we got our switch opened up. Concerning the pick
up at Keokuk that is included in Russ's consist, I see cars of starch that was
probably out of Hubinger, empty gons that came from either Griffin Wheel or
Electro Metal or Ferrosil. The empty battleships from the C&O and B&O were
probably empty coal cars from Calcium Carbide. Although I had a 69 mile
commute from Hannibal to Keokuk, I enjoyed the afternoon switcher since you
always got an early quit and if you added on the 2 hour and 20 minute commute
you would still be less than 8 hours. One summer I even drove 92 miles each
way to work the Ft Madison switch engine. But that is another story. Archie
