There were a couple more of the gas cars involved with head on collisons...One at Donnelly, IA in about 1930 and one on the Ashland Sioux City line a few years later. On all of these the ICC always recommended the switch from Gas to Diesel fuel, but I think that it was the Post Office department with their "leverage" who finally pressured the railroads into making the conversion. The impact ruptured the gasoline tank on the m.c. and it was engulfed in flames. It is my understanding that this led the USPS-Railway Mail Service to require any m.c. hauling United States mail to be diesel powered. You will see motorcars on many railroads that were converted from gasoline to diesel at about this time.
