Mike,
The scene definitely appears to be Pielet Brothers. The INdiana
Harbor Belt tracks which separated EMD's property from the scrap
yard, are in the foreground. Pielet Brothers scrapped most EMD trade
ins. EMD had an arrangement with them to salvage specific components
from each locomotive to be used in the re-manufacture program. Over
the years, the salvaged components included traction motors, engines,
generators some small motors and some fans. These components were
returned to EMD to be placed in a pool of material where they were
eventually stripped and the reusable parts remanufactured for
application to the new locomotives (locomotives with 7000 series
order numbers, new locomotives with no reused components had 5000
series order numbers). As an example, the engine was completely
stripped and components including crankshafts, camshafts, gears,
pumps and govenors were qualified and then remanufactured for in an
otherwise new locomotive. The customer generally didn't get his own
parts back. The unused parts such as the crankcase, were returned to
Pielet Brothers for scrapping.
As locomotive design and technology changed, fewer and fewer parts
were reusable. Eventually, EMD discontinued the program. A customer
could and often did trade in non EMD locomotives. These went directly
to Pielet Brothers without any salvage in most cases (some RRs traded
in Alco locomotives and EMD reused the trucks on the new locomotive,
Missouri pacific for instance and Q traded EMD units to GE in the
same manner.) In these instances, EMD still gave the customer the
parts credit and used material from their parts pool.
As the the trade ins declined, so did Pielet Brothers' business. By
that time, the next generation was running the business. Eventually,
Pielet Brothers ran afoul of the Environmental Protection Agency.
They ordered them to clean up the site. Shortly there after, I
believe, they went out of business. EMD did use other facilities for
scrapping. I know that Soo Line's 10 U Boats were sent to a scrap
yard in Joliet.
