During the Chicago visit be sure to:

At Union Station- go to track 2/4 and look down the stairwell into the
entrance to the underground part of CUS. While you cant enter, its still neat to

see a part of history. Go to track 26/28 platforms and look at the covered over

entrances to the mail chutes. Go out either of the west entrances onto
Jackson or Adams to get a flavor of how the old station felt. Going down these
corridors is some of the last of the "old Station". Speaking of which Go out
on
East Van Buren and look at the old converted Alton frt house. When you take
the dinky as you leave CUS be sure to look to the right to see the last
remnants of House 1 and 2. Be sure to visit the waiting room for the restored
granduer of the station. Walk up either set of steps to Clinton. These are the
stone steps worn down by thousands of feet and where movies have been shot.
Go out the West Jackson St exit. When you come into daylight look southwest
across the street at 547 W Jackson at the beautiful white building. Thats the
old Q HQ. Go to that side of the street and walk west 1/2 block. Enter into
Lou Mitchells for a one of kind breakfast enjoyed by RRers for decades. You
will not be disappointed.Come hungry.
Walk east on Jackson over the river to Wells St.(about 5 blocks) Turn south
on Wells for a half block and stop. Look up at the "L" where the little brick
building sits next to the Alley. This is the spot where the 3rd rail
connected to the "L".
Go to La Salle St station. Have a meal at the converted Rock Island coach on
Congress Parkway and Wells nearby. Good Italian Food.
Go to Michigan Ave and see the Old Sante Fe HQ on South Michigan. You'll
know it by the circular windows up high. Go another couple blocks east and look

down on the old IC trakcs submerged at Grant Park.
Have a meal at the Power House which is the old C&NW power house on Canal St
north of CUS. Its a 5 star with comparable prices.
Go look at the remnant of the Navy Pier line that starts at a bridge just
north of the restaurant and runs east along the river.
Go to Wrigley Field(not for the Cubs),(take the "L") but on Clark St you can
still find pieces of the old Milw trackage that ran along here. Farther
South near Goose Island theres still a piece of live track with service. Some
of
the last street running in Chicago.

Roosevelt Rd-Be sure to walk a few blocks south on Canal St and stop on the
new overpass over the old Q main and take in the 16th st wye and the St
Charles Air Line which is not long for this world and the old B&OCT lift
bridge.
Then look to the southwest where the new condos are being built. This is the
site of old house 5 and the Edleweis(sp) brewery is just behind that across
the
street. Look to the North under the Air line and against the UPS truck
parking lot and you can still make out the CNW line that used to come down to
16th
st wye(well maybe you can if you know where to look).

On the dinky ride:
Western Ave-Look to the south to take in the last vestige of "local" service
on the old Q in Chgo. Look to the north at the UP Global yards which are the
site of the old Wood St potato yards for the C&NW.

Berwyn,Stone Ave,LaGrange rd, Hinsdale,Highlands,Fairview Ave,Downers Grove
Main St,Naperville-see the old Q depots. Western Springs has a brand new
remake of the old depot.

Aurora-Enjoy the food at the Paytons and walk around as your free to
explore. Visit the "depot" which is the last part of the old shop complex. Its
last
use was as an air brake shop. About where the hotel sits was the frt
house, about where the post office is located was the coach shops. This is the
area
where the first Q mainline headed more or less straight North.Look for the
church steeple to the North and its just at the foot of that hill. Still goes
to
West Chicago.

Visit the old depot on South Broadway before the developer takes it down for
condos. Its just 5 or 6 blocks south of the current depot.
Eola is the classification yard for all local traffic but there really isnt
a whole lot going on there. Best spot is just off McClure road on company
property where you can pretty much sit and not be bothered. Its about 3 miles
east from the "depot".

You dont have enough time.Have fun.
