Charlie,
The first NYC J1s were built in 1927 by American Locomotive Works.
Q's, of course, were built in 1930. It is my understanding that the Q
hudsons were based primarily on the heavy USRA pacific and the
similar Southern Ps4. I think BRHS Bulletin #16 on the hudsons,
discusses that point.
