Three weeks from today, on September 20, 2008, the Illinois Railway
Museum will host a day remembering Railway Post Office operations.
The centerpiece of the day will be the inclusion of CB&Q 1923, an
RPO/baggage car.
Below is information of events planned during the day. As always,
plans are subject to change based on equipment availability.

RPO History Day
September 20, 2008 (Saturday)
On September 20, The Illinois Railway Museum will host a day devoted
to remembering the operation of RPO (Railway Post Office) cars
throughout the United States.
Among the events scheduled are:
* Multiple demonstration mail catches throughout the day with the
RPO included in the Coach Train. Ride behind a train making mail
catches. Observe mail catches from ground level.
* A short talk recognizing the Illinois Railway Museum for
preserving railway mail service history by demonstrating actual
mail catches.
* Tours of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy 1923 RPO compartment.
* A 30 minute presentation with questions following about RPO
history by
- Frank Scheer, Railway Service Library, Boyce, Virginia
- Ed DeRouin, author of Moving Mail and Express by Rail
* A roundtable discussion with retired mail clerks in attendance
moderated by
- Frank Scheer
- Ed DeRouin
- John Rothwell, former mail clerk
- Norbert Shacklette, retired MP station agent and conductor
All are invited to come to the Illinois Railway Museum on Saturday,
September 20, 2008 to learn more about the way mail was transported
throughout the United States prior to 1967 and to see mail being
caught by a train.
Admission to the museum is $12 for adults and $8 for children. Both
electric and diesel trains are scheduled to operate September 20.
