According to John Strauss' GN Pictorial V. 5, the round-tail observations
began to disappear from the EB and Western Star as early as the winter of
1960-61. They were used in summer consists from then on, with the last
mention of them being for the 1966 summer season. Information gleaned from
the book suggests this was done to facilitate the combination of the
EB-NCL-TWZ on the Q.
Storage mail cars would carry "Great Northern" in the letterboard. A new
Walthers car, #932-6801, will be similar to 72' cars the GN acquired from
the CGW in the 1960's. No plastic model of the 85' storage mail cars is
available at this time. Heavyweights were in use on the Western Star, but
doubtful on the EB. The Walthers EB RPO car can also be used for storage
mail.
Walthers currently offers the EB dome car in NP two-tone green, #932-9095. I
have been told by several NP folks that the roof vents are not the same, but
the window patterns and measurements are the same. The pre-merger GN Cascade
Green scheme is also available from Walthers on this dome car, good for
mid-1968 and newer consists, #932-9094. There was only one listed dome car
painted this way, #1320.
