Dave's assertion is correct as the relationship between FGEX, WFE, &
BREX/National was touched upon in a Burlington Bulletin. Also I have
a National painting diagram book from the "30's & its obvious FGEX is
a 'partner'.
There was always a closer tie between GN (& its subsidiaries) with
CB&Q than between NP & Q despite the fact that GN & NP had equal
stakes.
Overton covers this topic in his Burlington Route opus. I don't have
an OER in front of me to compare the fleet sizes but my memories of Q
frt trains on the LaCrosse Div was that I saw far more WFEX reefers
than NP's. (and far more FGEX than PFE or ART). Recall too there
were a few yrs when NP routed its long distance trains to/from
Chicago via C&NW, not CB&Q.
Dave is correct too that you need to consider era & location. The
LaCrosse Div saw more reefers off the I.C. than much of the system
because banana's for much of the country served by Q, GN & NP were
funneled to the Q in E. Dbq (covered by our dinner speaker @ the
annual meet in Dbq 2+ yrs ago).
Specific shippers would also be a factor (beer & meat for example
shipped in URTX provided reefers by some Q on-line shippers)and
limited interchanges (Green Bay & Western reefers to the Q in Winona
at their western terminus)
Ironically the term "Three Sisters" shows up in several Q postcards &
brochures as was a prominent scenic point on the LaCrosse Div.
