Foreign cars (to the CZ - which also includes the CB&Q non-CZ cars)
is what really started this whole thing. In one period in 1961
(Sept. - Dec.), the percentage of having at least one foreign car on
the CZ was over 70%. The most common CB&Q cars at that point were
the pool coaches - the 16 section cars hadn't been converted yet and
there was a demand for more coach space. The next most common
foreign CB&Q car was a 10-6 from the 1952 order, cars usually run on
the Blackhawk or American Royal Zephyrs. After that, 6-5s from the
same '52 order and DZ 6-5s. The TCZ dome coaches show up next. Of
these, the only easy cars in HO plastic are the TCZ domes - the
Con-Cor domes were patterned after those as opposed to the CZ cars.
Which is what brought me into getting extra CZ domes when I found
them cheap - I have an idea of making one of those from a combination
of the two cars. It would have been great had BLI done the '52 10-6s
as that would have opened up a lot of possibilities for the Q
modeler. And that's the reason I pick up 10-6s when I find them
cheap - to convert to those cars. And, given the way things work,
you have to have two sets of cars if you plan on using some for the
Exposition Flyer and some for post-1952 anyway due to the FWD and
other considerations. By 1949, the Expo could look a lot like a CZ
without the obs, diner, & lounge.
Attempting to do a post 1958 consist really gets hairy due to the
influx of the CB&Q cars. Unfortunately, there just aren't that many
cars to use for the DZ, ARZ, Blackhawk, TCZ, and pool Zephyr
cars. (The easiest is the Havelock baggage cars).
