I was fortunate to have been hired by Amtrak in the summer of 1973 when Mr.
Alex Barkett of the Civic Plaza National Bank had his former Texas Zephyr (ex
Denver Zephyr) parked in KC Union Station. He hired two men who worked full
time, re-upholstering, painting and refurbishing the beautiful train set. I
took my camera to work often and caught various images of the progress or end
result of the efforts. Mr. Barkett gave a series of excursion train trips
around KC on the Kansas City Terminal Railway, on the former DZ equipment
pulled by two KCT switchers.

Later, Mr. Barkett bought the former Twin Zephyr set ( ex Nebraska Zephyr)
that had been stored at Denver Union Station in the mid 70's. Lastly, he found
6 cars of the sister Denver Zephyr set, and brought them to Kansas City Union
Station as well. This partial set was once combined with the cars that are
still in the Black Hills today.

The Saudis came and inspected the 3 train sets and he took them on a quick
ride on one set of the equipment over the Santa Fe west towards Emporia, pulled
by an SD40 or SD45. I don't recall specifically.

Mr. Barkett had a neon Arabic tail sign created and installed on the back
of the ex DZ set. (When I invest in a slide scanner, I can share photographs
of these images.)

I was very unfortunate those historic pieces left the USA. It would be
worthwile to get a least one trainset back if it still exists.

  Hubert
