After looking at 3 or 4 dozen color pictures of Q steam locomotives, it appears
that some of the side rods/valve gear are painted black. On others, they are
natural steel color and on one 4-8-2 the main rods are black and the rest of
the valve gear natural steel. Does anyone know if they were painted black or is
that dirt and grime? I always thought that the rules prohibited painting them
the same as couplers. I don't like the looks of nickle silver valve gear on
models, it does not look like steel. Any help on this will be greatly
appreciated. John
