The builder plates were affixed to the locomotive as the locomotive
was constructed. It's not unlike the serial number plate on your
washer or dryer - and ALL units had one, A & B.
The "F" was affixed when the locomotive was lettered. In terms of E
& F A units, the direction was fairly obvious. BUT, when you got to
the early (typically high hood) geeps, where the front could be long
hood or short hood - or both - it made a LOT of difference. Same
with steeple cab and center cab units. There were locomotives that
had controls for both long & short hood but one direction was
indicated as "front".
