When I hired out in the very early 60's the ballast
was quite noticeably gray. Of course this could have
been the result of the Q's housekeeping policies.  I
worked both the C&I and the Main Line and both lines
were nearly equal as it relates to ballast color.

Leo, I'm not sure the slag was any harder on foot ware
than the decomposed granite in use today.  I've worked
with Brakemen that "walked out" of new, company
authorized boots in a year.  Neither material could be
considered too "user friendly".
