Michal,
I would include N scale - the biggest problem is my lack of
familiarity in what is available, plus, to be honest, a lack of
knowledge as to fidelity.
For instance, the Rivarossi 12-1 in HO is a car with all of the
typical issues related to early generation plastic models - it has
large rivets, it has a bare under body (and incorrect for what is
there (though the bareness frankly, is a blessing because you don't
have to remove as much to begin redetailing)), and has some
dimensions that are off (more vertically than horizontally). For all
that, it is the only available plastic model of a 2410 12-1 (though
it is in fact a multi-hybrid). For the dormitory use, it might be OK
given the placement and the relative lack of other details
needed. But, as part of the revenue portion of the train, it is no
where near the quality of the latest Walthers or Branchline. Too,
there are stand-ins for some cars, for instance the WP baggage and
coach have been represented by true Common Standard cars (sometimes
unfortunately called "Harriman"). But, I would not include any of
these cars in the list I put together as I feel it misleading,
especially when the list is presented under a Historical Society framework.
My lack of knowledge of N scale products would make me
uncomfortable with these same issues and without knowing how N scale
(scale) modelers treat tolerances in terms of "closies count". I
know from my very casual viewing of N scale layouts at shows and
such, that the scale aspect has exploded and in many cases is the
same as for those in HO. Perhaps better. But my lack of knowledge
on the subject would make me very unsettled for adding it to the list.
What we have done for the freight car lists is to attempt to
form a very loose committee of folks dedicated to rivet counting and
ensuring models are correct for the application. We can certainly do
that same sort of arrangement for passenger cars, and we'll have to
get that all together at some point.
I plan on adding a consist portion to this page (or as an adjunct
to this page) and use this as both a template for other trains, and
for future articles. Additions, corrections, modifications, blame,
etc. encouraged.
