Welcome to the group.

I rode and/observed the combined trains often during the 1968-Amtrak
period, so I will make a few observations.

The consists varied as to season and day of the week (the pm zephyr
often ran alone on some days of the weekend.

A typical consist would run something like this:

1 NP baggage
1 GN baggage
1 Q baggage (but not always)
1-3 Q coaches (either flat top or dome)
1 GN flat top coach
2 GN dome coaches (sometimes a third)
GN ranch car or diner (sometimes both)
GN full dome lounge
2-4 GN sleeping cars
1 NP dome coach
1 NP flat top coach
1 NP dome coach
NP Travelers Rest lounge
NP diner
NP slumbercoach
1 NP dome sleeper (with beverage & snack service at tables in the
dome)
1 NP sleeper

As I stated above, this consist could vary for a variety of reasons
and could have more cars, but this one was pretty typical. IIRC the
GN diner did not always run to Chicago, but the NP dining car did.
During dinner NB I often was seated with people who were Empire
Builder passengers wanting a 'sit down' meal. (I was headed for the
Dakots on the NCL)

I hope this helps you somewhat.

Bob P.
