NUMBERBOARDS AND HEADLIGHT
Hello Ewout,
I saw your post, as I am a new member I have been going through them all
over the last few days.
I only run DC so don't know if this is of interest to you or anyone
else.
I removed the top headlight and rewired to get constant lighted number
boards on both ends of my Proto SD 45's.
For the numberboard wiring, I removed the bulb leads from PCB for the
rear and top front headlight/numberboards, joined both white leads
together then placed 1 bulb blue lead to P1 (grey wire to motor) and the
other blue bulb lead to P8 (black, truck power input).
I removed the lenses and chopped out the headlight sections being
careful not to damage them. Once the headlight sections were removed,
for the Front - I painted the back of the top bottom light with clear
red metallic (a couple of coats) then silver (over both lights) and
covered the back with Bare Metal Chrome Foil ( to stop light bleed just
in case). Then installed the top light, I painted the area of the
numberboards where the headlight was removed from with silver then black
also to stop light bleed.
For the rear I chopped the headlight lens off and wrapped it in Bare
Metal Foil and painted the top of the number board section silver then
black and a piece of B/M/F. then installed them both seperately. I
covered the radiator fans with a small piece of .020" plastic sheet to
stop light bleed.
The only problem for some may be that there is no rear headlight, for me
it's OK as I run 3 together and on the middle unit I have disconnected
the nose headlight, but have constant numberboards. They run back to
nose, back to back so the lead and last unit have operating nose
headlights only.
I have also used this method for my Proto GP30's too.
I used Overland #9000 horns and chopped off the back one.
Hope this may help someone.
Regards, Lyndon - Australia
