The D&RGW PAs - two ABA sets - were purchased for the CZ two years prior to its
initiation and pulled the Exposition Flyer and some other D&RGW trains prior to
CZ service. The PAs took over when the train arrived in Salt Lake (eastbound)
or Denver (westbound) for the first few years. When first delivered, the PAs
had the same black and light yellow striping as the F3s and FTs, but soon after
they started pulling the CZ, they were painted silver with a yellow nose - as
in the latest Precision Craft offering - to better match the solid stainless
steel of the cars. Running through the many tunnels of the route, Alco soot
kept them quite dirty, so they were repainted into the Aspen gold and silver
with the four black stripes created in 1952. By the mid-1950s, the F3s were
assigned to the CZ more frequently, and the PAs became power for the Royal
Gorge and Yampa Valley Mail until their retirement in the mid to late1960s. I
have virtually all of the D&RGW books and have never s
een a picture or comment that the PAs operated off D&RGW rails. In fact, the
D&RGW was so short of power that units were leased from other railroads to keep
the traffic going.

I've never seen a photo of the Grande's PA's enroute, or anywhere
else. It would seem they just appeared at Denver out of the blue.
