Galesburg to Quincy - Prior to the mid-50's the only signals on this
line were at Bushnell and from Golden to Quincy. I don't have any
information on what type of signals existed prior to that time.
Starting in 1955, a number of signal changes were made, all using
searchlights. ABS was installed on the double track between
Galesburg and Bushnell using ground-mounted single direction
signals. Also in 1955, modified CTC was installed between Bushnell
and Golden, and extended to Quincy in 1956. In 1959 and 1960, the
double track ABS north of Bushnell was retired and replaced with CTC.
At Quincy, at least a portion of the Quincy Loop was signalized, but
I have never seen any signal type except semaphores. The loop was
taken out, I believe, in 1953.
Searchlights were used also for the new line in 1960 crossing the
Mississippi, and in conjunction with CTC installed between Mark and
Palmyra, and modified CTC from Palmyra to Macon. West of Macon to
Saxton utilized 3 color light signals. 3CL's may have been initially
used east of Macon also, prior to CTC, because Hannibal to Palmyra
was also 3CL's. Hannibal to Palmyra was taken up in 1960 west of
Oakwood. Searchlights were used on the new line from Needles to
Maxwell and also at Brookfield with CTC that was installed from
Brookfield to Needles.
I don't have a good signal history prior to CTC on the line from
Kansas City to Napier, however searchlights were used throughout with
CTC.
On the line from St. Louis to Burlington, it appears that
searchlights were used exclusively as far as Machens. From Machens
to Old Monroe, SL's were used at control points when CTC was
installed in 1949, and 3CL's were retained for intermediate signals.
ABS between Old Monroe and West Quincy utilized 3CL's. When CTC was
installed between Hannibal and Mark, searchlights were utilized at
control points at Hannibal and Falk. Mark to West Quincy was already
CTC, dating from the late 20's. West Quincy to Burlington was dark.
It appears that SL's were also used exclusively in later
installations in the Galesburg terminal (except toward Chicago which
will be covered later), at Beardstown, Hagener to Concord, and
Centralia.
West of Galesburg across Iowa, SL's were used throughout for short
sections of CTC and single direction ground mounts on the double
track. West of Red Oak, 3CL intermediates were retained for CTC as
far as Balfour, and between Pacific Jct and Council Bluffs. SL's
were used at all control points and in the terminal at Council Bluffs.
