My first Q job was to be at the Eola Reclamation Plant as a crane operators
assistant(1968-69) hooking items for the crane. Most Q fans know about the
plant and its' role dismantling aged, wrecked and obsolete cars.
But the primary purpose of the plant was in its' name, reclamation. I was
amazed to see the array of items recovered and reconditioned at the plant and
returned to service system wide. I remember so clearly one mans job was to
take recovered air hose glad hands and threaded connections and attach them to
new rubber hose lengths to create new air hoses. He would stand at his station
making hoses all day which went into a tub that then went into a 40' Q box on
the east side of the plant.
When I worked the 4PM east yard engine at Eola our second or third move
every night was to "pull the dock". All switching was from the west end. We'd
pull the middle track which contained gondola loads of outbound scrap and then
shove any needed mtys in. Next we'd pull the "dock" which was behind the
building on the south side. We'd pull 4 to 6- 40 footers a night loaded with an
array of recovered material headed to storehouses and rip tracks around the
system. We'd then shove more mtys along the dock for loading the next day.
Other than Galesburg where did the Q maintain wheels shops ?
