It's clear that a story from one of us jogs the memory of others to share
similar related events. Great !
So here's mine related to Karls' about CAT:(I may have told this one years
ago but there's lots of new folks on this list and I apologize to any who know
this one already).
One fine day the crew is switching CAT and the Condr. has a bad cold. The
illness definately affected him because his normal postion was in the firemans
seat directing events from up there and doing the P.R. with the CAT folks when
needed. He would go for days w/o touching any part of a RR car except the grab
irons on and off the engine or w/c. But this day with his cold he decided to
help switch the loading trks. So we tie into trk 12 under the Condrs guiding
lantern,he looks to ensure the pin has dropped, couples the air and waits for us
walk the trk to make sure all is ready to go. Upon our return from the trek
we pull up and cut off the 12th and last car at the door in the building as it
is a setback. The tractor on the car is not blocked or tied down but rather
just sitting there. We go about the business of setting the loads to our
outbound train and bring back 11 mtys for loading. Now the Condr has stayed at
the
doorway and signals us to a joint on the re-spot car. Again he checks to make
sure the pin has dropped, makes the air and gives us a pinwheel to shove into
the
building. After about six cars have passed the doorway Jerry pinches them up
a bit with the independent and the string goes into emergency ?
Jerry tries to reset the trainline but it wont co-operate. Maybe a broken air
hose ? So we trek into the depths of the building to find the problem. Of
course changing an air hose in the depressed trk is going to be a trick. As we
near the end of the string we can hear the air blowing and find it is an open
angle cock on the rear mty flat. Note I said rear mty flat. The car for re-spot
isn't there ? It has sailed down to the end of the trk. hit the bumping post
and unceremoniously unloaded that new shining CAT back onto the loading floor
where a crowd has gathered to look things over. The knuckles came uncoupled as
soon as the momentum was reduced. And that's exactly what the official
accident report stated. All of us have had couplers come uncoupled for various
reasons; low hanging or bent pin lifter, trk obstruction, etc
There are those on this list who can spot immediately what wasn't done and
what might have been the cause of this little incident.
