Is (was) Honest John the guy who participated in a "railroaders round table"
at the BRHS meeting a few years ago in Aurora...I'm sure the guy's name was
John ?? and seems like it might have been Honest John
I'll never forget one of HJ's (if it was him) tales...Seems he was the
fireman on one of the Steam Excursions ...probably with the '52. They had
made a
stop someplace along the line and a woman passenger came up to the engine and
asked if she could climb up in the cab. The engine crew told her that she
would get all dirty, but she insisted so they helped her climb up in the cab.
While "on the seat" she began to "pepper" HJ with questions. Q How much
does this engine weigh? A I don't really know...Q How fast will it go A I
don't know.... Q.How much water does the tender hold A I don't know.
Woman said..."You don't know much about this engine do you"? Answer by
HJ..."Well I know it pays me $19.35 a day"
Does this sound right??? Does to me.
