Here's the second story that came to mind after reading about the unwelcome
guest at Montgomery.
One night while loading a late night departing dinky the veteran crew knew to
keep a careful watch for intoxicated passengers and that it was best to keep
any off rather than deal with them enroute. The two brakemen were at the rear
step of the rear car long before the mandatory 15 minutes prior to departure
watching the passengers load. There was no mention in the investigation if they
were paying equal attention to both males and females. At any rate they saw
no need to bar anyone from boarding and soon were leaving CUS. While collecting
tickets the rear man came upon a large gentlemen sitting with three others
who upon being approached by the trainman began verbally abusing him with many
four letter words and making many comments about the trainman's manhood, etc.
His friends got him to sit down and quiet down and assured the brkmn they would
keep things under control. But as soon as the brkmn passed into the next car
the guy started acting up again and verbally accosting other passengers. One
guy went into the next car and brought the brkmn back who warned the
intoxicated
passenger to sit down or be thrown off the train. He again sat down and the
brkmn went back to the next car collecting tickets. Shortly the drunk came
through the door and punched the brakeman who proceeded to defend himself quite
well. The drunk realizing he was getting the worst of the exchange backed off
and started walking to the door toward the car he had come from. The brkmn was
turning around to return to his collecting when from behind the drunk hit him
over the head with the wooden handle used to open the vents or windows (I used
to have one of these in my collection and it would make a nasty weapon). The
brkmn picked himself up and went for help from his partner and conductor. At
the next station stop the police were advised to meet the train and the drunk
was escorted off the train and spent time in the local jail.
So what you say? As it was a somewhat common occurrence to have police escort
off passengers then and even now upon occasion. Well, it seems the drunken
passenger upon recovering the next day or so called Q management to complain
about the way he had been treated and an investigation was held.
Other passengers collaborated the brkmns story and testified against the
passengers version.
The decision was the brkmn got time off for allowing the passenger on the
train and not getting help sooner!
