Some of you were pretty close to the exact spot:
In the summer of 1874 Gen. Custer was placed in charge of an expedition into
what became South Dakotas Black Hills. The expedtion was to travel thru the
hills to do geographic research, study flora and fauna and determine once and
for
all whether there was any substance to the rumors of gold.
Included with many other experts were two former Colo. miners said to be
experts at finding the yellow stuff. In late July or early August along French
Creek gold was found. The exact location was"near French Creek alongside the
C.B.&Q. railway" as confimred by one the miners in 1900 upon a return to the
site.
I believe this spot is near present day Custer which is in the more southern
portion of the Black Hills.
If your interested in Western history, the Indian wars and Custers life I
highly recommend SON of THE MORNING STAR by Evan S Connell (1984). Be prepared
to
have many popular bits of folklore about Custer,Indians and the West brought
under correction.
