Unfortuanately a lot publishers are converting exquisite b/w (& color)
photos shot with film into digital - clarity is always lost. I know
the pixel lovers on the list will disagree but 'film' has, in effect,
an infinite # of pixels and therefore sharpness & clarity provided the
original was taken with a high quality, clean lens (true whether
digital or conventional) and is developed with care (I always use
KODAK processing - you get what you pay for). It's no coincidence
that progfessional photographers still use film va. digital. What you
gain in being 'instant' (does this sound like the old Polaroid vs.
film debate?), you potentially lose in sharpness. There are a lot of
bargains on single lens reflex cameras & lenses now; a good time to by
if you want photos of the best possible kind (just look at any old
Sundance Publ. book or other quality publisher using film (or glass
plate) negs for their photos. Gerald
