Greg,
Find a friend that paints with Acrylics.
It's safer.
It doesn't eat plastics.
It doesn't need a barrier coat which adds an unnecessary level of paint to hide
the detail.
And best of all, ( drumroll please)
Modelflex, CB&Q Gray 16-154
Scale coat you'll have to mix custom or EL Gray.
Floquil, I remember some of us using SP lettering Gray with a little of
something added.
The prototype Gray varied a little. I believe the GEs were lighter and the
SD_24s were darker but that could due to the turbo's exaust coating the top
deck.
I've used the Modelflex on my SW-1 and 44 tonner. It is an almost perfect match
to P2K's gray on thier Chinese Red SD7s. It is a warm light gray and lays down
with a semi gloss finish.
I like to compare the colors to one of the Morning Sun books to get a "scale"
color match rather than the chips. I also factor in the overall lighting of the
photo. Look at the sky and see if the color has shifted to magenta and take
that in to consideration.
I just saw the SW at Union and they got the gray just right for my eye.
Some painters like to match the gray to the Microscale decals but on models
I've seen the top gray looks 1 or 2 shades darker than I like.
Remember the reason modelers don't like to spray acrylics is the clogging in
the airbrush.
Strain the clumps out of the paint and thin with unscented 70% or higher
Isopropyl Alcohol. Experiment with the thinning ratio till you get it right.
Keep your tip clean. And gloss coat with Future floor covering, decal after 4
days.
Sincerely,
Rob Manley

Subject: [CBQ] Looking for color info
I have a friend who is going to paint an SW1 for me in the blackbird
scheme and I would like some input as to what color most people are
using for the gray on this engine. I seem to recall Floquil SP lark
gray is close. My friend is going to be using Floquil or Scalecoat as
he hasn't moved into the acrylic world as of yet.
I appreciate and thank any and all who can answer this for me.
