In the 1928 ORER, insulated ice reefer 39800 appeared for the first time. It
was shown with the inside length of 37' 11", outside length of 41' 2 1/4"
outside length and capacity of 2524 cu. ft., and it was listed in ORER's until
1933. Based on the dimensions, it wasn't a CB&Q reefer. (By 1928, the only
reefers left in CB&Q numbers were ice cars - all the others having been
transferred to BREX in 1926, and none of them shared these dimensions) I think
that the only "subsidiary" left at this time was the QO&KC and it no longer had
its own equipment.
The other note of interest is the difference between the outside and inside
lengths. BREX reefers at this time typically had a difference of about seven
feet between the outside and inside lengths, whilst ice cars (having had the
ice bunkers removed) had a difference of about one foot.
Any suggestions where it came from?
