At the fall Dubuque meet, Merrill Publishing Associates introcuced the
photo CD entitled "Burlington Route Steam Locomotive Photos", 'from the Roy
Campbell Collection'. The CD, playable on either PC or Mac computer,
contains 140 high resolution (600 dpi) scans of Burlington Route steam
locomotives, from early to last of steam. They are in pdf format, requiring
Adobe Acrobat (often already on computers, but a free download if not), and
can be printed out individually or as a complete book if desired. Each photo
is accompanied by a caption, which prints with it, often identifying the
date and location (if known), building/scrapping info, etc.
Roy Campbell was a Milwaukee businessman who amassed one of the largest
steam locomotive collections in the Midwest from the 1920's to 1950's. From
1947 to 1949 he was business manager for Kalmbach Publications, than only MR
and Trains, and traveled the country on their behalf. This allowed him to
expand beyond his own photography to buy and trade with many other
photographers, often some of the top railroad photographers of the day (the
CD contains a number of Gerald M. Best photos, used with permission of the
California State Railroad Museum, for instance). The Burlington Route CD is
the first photo CD produced in an effort to share these with the railfan
community; Soo Line and Rock Island CD's have followed. The Milwaukee Road
Historical Association is also publishing a series of steam photo books from
this collection.
Regular price of the CD's is $20; as a spring meet special, Merrill
Publishing Associates will offer these at a price of $15 each, plus $2 S&H
(Wisconsin residents add 5.5% sales tax). All orders received through April
15 will be honored at these prices. CD's can be ordered from MPA, P.O. Box
51, Merrill, WI 54452 or merrillpublishingassociates@verizon.net
<mailto:merrillpublishingassociates@verizon.net> using Pay Pal.
