In the 1950s & 60s a number of small towns that had 2 or more stories
covered the upper floods with false fronts. As noted earlier the old
attractive windows & fronts were hidden under sheets of metal. This was
a fad that lasted into the 1980s & early 90s when people realized that
the older fronts were more attractive than the fronts that looked all
alike. Not only were the coverings removed but many towns found uses
for the second & third floors. In some cases the second foor was just
used for storage, but in other cases offices were opened or shops were
opened to give new life to old buildings.
