Modelers Choice just announced their new kits for the CB&Q XM-4 and
XM-4B 50' exterior post double plug door boxcars are available. They
look magnificent! These cars are prototypically accurate of the XM-4
series built at Havelock, so these are true CB&Q boxcars!
FYI:
CB&Q 47500-47799 class XM-4 built Havelock 1963
CB&Q 49000-49399 class XM-4B built Havelock 1965
Website: http://www.modelerschoice.com/index.htm - then scroll down
As you can see, there were about 700 of these cars on the CB&Q roster,
so they were seen frequently in the mid to late 60's.
I did some calculating and these may kits may at first look like
inexpensive kits ($12.00 each), but you have to also purchase the
roof, ends, frame, brake equipment, trucks, couplers, and special CB&Q
decals (which Modelers choice also sells). Still not super expensive
considering what you get!
Anyway, I plan on trying to build a few of these, but got to thinking:
Even if these were a bit more expensive than prior BRHS project cars,
does anyone out there have experience in having a special RTR run of
cars done. Even if these were a bit higher than an Athearn or P2k RTR
car how many of us would be interested in buying these
pre-built/pre-painted? I'll lead the charge on this if anyone else is
interested and see what I can find out.
