CBQ Listers,

Vic is a friend of mine from the Pikes Peak Division of the NMRA and shared
this update with me. I thought that this might be of interest to the list,
so I've forwarded on. Enjoy!

Subject: caboose
CB&Q 14634 is now in Buena Vista, CO.
It was quite a project moving it here. We managed to get half of the
trucking cost donated. The crane to place the caboose on the truck was
about $1600. The second
crane to load the trucks was another $360. Our plan to haul everything in
one load didn't work as the trucks weighed 8100 lbs each, forcing us to pay
for another semi and another crane to load them later.
The crane to unload in Buena Vista was donated. All told, the move cost
about $4,000. Eight volunteers, Sue and I included, went to Lincoln and
prepared the caboose
for moving. We had to cut off the steps with a torch to lower the height
for trucking. We removed coupler lift bars, etc to allow the ends to sit
lower. It was a long, hot, filthy day.
Moving day, August 22nd, was quite a show. We had a 70 ton crane, a crane
support truck with a trailer full of rigging, a semi with low boy trailer to
haul the caboose, the entire student population of the local two room
school, and in the middle of it all, Sue's mother fainted (doc perscribed
too much blood pressure medicine), so we had and ambulance and the local
rescue squad there too.
The caboose survived the move quite nicely. We lost one cupola window
somewhere in the first 50 miles. It just blew away and nobody following the
truck saw it go. A local painting contractor has volunteered his crew to
paint the caboose. A local welder has already reattached the steps. The
end beams are rotten and we have a logger who will donate fir logs that we
can use to fabricate new ones. This is turning into quite a community
project. Donations are still needed to cover the moving costs which went
way over budget for the second semi and the cranes in Lincoln which cost
about double what was budgeted.
If anyone would like to visit the caboose. It is located next to the DSP&P
depot at the only stoplight in Buena Vista, CO.
Vic
