SD9s seem to have a weird fuel tank arrangement. The tank appears to
actually be 2 smaller tanks, sometimes you see one, (at the rear), other times
both. Can someone comment on this option with the SD9 and why you see
different
tank configurations?

One tank was the water supply for the steam generator. When the steam
generator was removed, the water tank became a second fuel tank. The "SD9s"
class
SD9 did not have a steam generator and therefore only one small (800 gal)
fuel tank. The "s" stood for "single control". As I recall, all of the CB&Q
GP7, GP9 and SD9 had dual controls and steam generators. Hope this answers
your question regarding the fuel/water tanks?
