Brad,
The lights on the nose were the headlights, the unit mounted between
the number boards was a Mars signal light. The Mars light had one
clear and one red lense. A relay was hooked to the Power Cutoff Switch
so when the train went into emergency, the red light would illuminate
and warn trains that might be approaching on a parallel track.
When I worked in the Lincoln, Nebraska diesel shop from 1979 to 1985,
2249 was the only unit left that had the Mars light operational.
Several others had the case but most had lost the actual gyrating
light inside.
